About Human Development Index

Geography is a human science that contributes by indicating the paths to be followed for the full development of a nation, as its studies explain the dynamic processes of societies in continuous interaction between each other, and transforming geographic space.
Development data is important so that governments can assess whether public policies are being effective for the population.

         Learn about Human Development Index

The HDI was created to emphasize that people and their capabilities should be the ultimate criteria for assessing the development of a country, not economic growth alone. The HDI can also be used to question national policy choices, asking how two countries with the same level of Gross National Income (GNI) per capita can end up with different human development outcomes. These contrasts can stimulate debate about government policy priorities.

              How important is the HDI?

The HDI, Human Development Index is an indicator adopted by the United Nations that assesses the quality of life of people in virtually all countries.
The simple analysis of the Gross Domestic Product -GDP is not enough to signal if the quality of people's lives has improved or not, in this way, the Human Development Index is much broader and places individuals as the main objective.
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living.
The HDI is the geometric mean of normalized indices for each of the three dimensions.
The health dimension is assessed by life expectancy at birth, the education dimension is measured by mean of years of schooling for adults aged 25 years and more and expected years of schooling for children of school entering age. The standard of living dimension is measured by gross national income per capita. The scores for the three HDI dimension indices are then aggregated into a composite index using geometric mean. The HDI ranges from zero to 1.

See below the 5 countries with the highest HDI in the world:

Norway   0.944
Australia  0.935
Switzerland 0.930
 Denmark  0.923
 Netherlands  0,922
